AIR TRANSPORT WORLD NAMES AMERICAN AIRLINES AS ECO-AIRLINE OF THE YEAR 2023

American’s commitment, which leads the industry, to reduce emissions in its operations is recognized.

Air Transport World (ATW), marca de medios líder dedicada a cumplir con las necesidades de información de las comunidades de aerolíneas globales y transporte aéreo comercial, anunció hoy que American Airlines fue nombrada la Eco-Aerolínea del Año.

This award is the latest recognition of American’s progress towards its ambitious sustainability goals.

“American is actively incorporating sustainability at every level of our business, from the fuel we buy to the food we serve our customers,” said Robert Isom, CEO of American. “And our approach to ‘all the above’ is just the beginning. As the Eco-Airline of the year, we will continue to lead the industry as innovators in our space, and affirm our firm commitment to building an American Airlines that will prosper forever.”

With the largest fleet renewal efforts in the history of the industry, and the airline’s investments in the fuel of the future, ATW widely highlighted American’s work to have a more efficient operation with fuel, and with more efficient ships, increasingly increasing the implementation of low-carbon fuel and new technologies.

Fuel efficiency is maximized with a new application, called Smart Gating, which optimizes the allocation of boarding gates at congested airports. Smart Gating is currently used at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Miami International Airport, and saves approximately 1.4 million gallons of fuel, and 13,500 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually.

Current fleet renewal efforts have also helped the airline increase fuel efficiency by more than 10% since 2013, which has contributed to saving 1.9 trillion gallons of fuel, and prevented the emission of 19 million metric tons of carbon dioxide. Today, half of American’s main fleet is less than 10 years old.

Leading the sustainable aviation fuel consumption (SAF) industry, the world’s largest airline used 2 million gallons of SAF in 2022, and doubled its use year after year. SAF’s agreements with Gevo, Inc., Neste and Aemetis mean that the airline’s commitment to low-carbon fuel reaches 620 million gallons. American is also the first airline to make two direct investments focused on the development of hydrogen electric propulsion technology, and also on the future of hydrogen distribution logistics.

American was the first airline in the world to receive validation from the Science Based Targets (SBTi) initiative for its goal of intermediate carbon reduction. American’s “science-based goal” is to reduce its carbon intensity by 45% by 2035, with the year 2019 as the basis.

The airline also appeared on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index of North America in 2022, for the second consecutive year, improving its score by more than 20% year after year.

Selected by a panel of editors and analysts from ATW, Routes, Aviation Week and CAPA, the ATW Airline Industry Achievement Awards recognize excellence in a wide range of airline operations, and is a connoted achievement in the air transport industry.

“At a time when sustainability is a force that leads the aviation industry, American Airlines has a clear vision for a sustainable aviation future and has taken important steps to meet its goals. With a considerable carbon reduction strategy, which reaches almost all branches of the company, the Eco-airline of the Year award for American is completely deserved in what has been the most competitive area so far,” said Karen Walker, Editor-in-Chief of ATW.
